A planned upgrade of the South Gippsland Highway between South Dandenong and Lynbrook could include a vital bike connection to Cranbourne through Melbourne's southeastern suburbs.
A strategic cycling corridor serving this growing sector of outer Melbourne had been planned along the Cranbourne Rail corridor, but is no longer considered feasible south of the railway crossing with the Westernport Highway.
VicRoads is in the early stages of planning a 4.5km upgrade to the highway between Green Road and Lynbrook Boulevard, worth $4.25 million, and there is opportunity for a section of the planned SCC to be re-routed via the highway.
Riders who make the journey from Dandenong further south and back currently have no choice but to use the totally unsuitable existing highway.
Consultation is now open and the public can have their say on what this upgrade should address. Riders would no doubt agree that a bike facility in the highway corridor is essential.
There is an interactive map and surveys where you can provide input. Feedback is open until 18 February.
VicRoads will undertake a range of technical investigations such as engineering, environmental, cultural heritage, traffic modelling and land use.
The outcomes of these investigations combined with community feedback will help identify improvements that can be delivered within the budget and be considered for future funding opportunities.
