Car parks converted into colourful public space for Balaclava

Rows of underused parking spaces have come to life as a vibrant pop-up park in Balaclava.

The instalment at the corner of Chapel Street and Dickens Street replaces 10 on-street parking spaces with an eye-catching assortment of bright red, removable mounds, colourful ground artwork, additional seating and a basketball hoop.

A bike path runs through the centre of the park, which connects with the temporary bike lanes at Nepean Highway and Chapel Street. Extra bike parking has also been installed along the path.

Balaclava has the least amount of open public space in all neighborhoods in the City of Port Phillip at 5%, far lower than the average of 17% across the council area.

"The pop-up park will be in place for at least one year," says City of Port Phillip Mayor Heather Cunsolo. "We have not set a date for its removal."
