Riders are reminded that works to upgrade Melbourne’s underground rail loop stations continue to impact CBD bike routes.
Most works are conducted at night, but during July city bike routes may also be disrupted during the day.
At Melbourne Central Station works will be underway for 24 hours from 9pm Friday 14 July to 5am Monday 17 July.
Additionally, night works will take place between 6pm and 7am during the following times:
- Sunday 2 July to Friday 7 July
- Tuesday 11 July to Friday 14 July
- Monday 17 July to Thursday 20 July
- Sunday 23 July to Friday 28 July
- Sunday 30 July to Friday 4 August
Extra night works may take place between 6pm and 7am throughout July.
Works underway on La Trobe Street at Melbourne Central Station
There will be a series of overnight closures of both westbound lanes on a section of La Trobe Street, between Swanston Street and Elizabeth Street from 7pm to 6am throughout July with a brief vehicle detour will be in place via Russell Street, Lonsdale Street and Queen Street.
Pedestrian and bicycle access to Melbourne Central Station and the Elizabeth St/La Trobe St tram stop will be maintained.
Works will take place at the following locations:
- Melbourne Central Station east vent shaft construction area, directly opposite 209 La Trobe Street
- Melbourne Central Station west vent shaft construction area, directly opposite 260 La Trobe Street
The Melbourne Central Station east vent shaft construction area will be used until late 2023 to allow project works to continue safely, while the west vent shaft will be demobilised.
Traffic management will be in place to ensure the safety of road users and pedestrians during works, including ramps and temporary fencing.
There will be intermittent use of pedestrian gates, and cranes at construction areas during standard working hours until late.
At Flagstaff Station there will be intermittent temporary northbound lane closure on William Street, between Little Lonsdale Street and La Trobe Street, between 9pm and 5am Monday 17 July, Tuesday 25 July and Sunday 30 July.
There will be no vehicle access to William Street from Little Lonsdale Street during these times, with a brief vehicle detour via Little Lonsdale Street, Queen Street and La Trobe Street.
Crane works have started at the Parliament Station south site compound at 108 Spring Street, Melbourne and will be ongoing until 3pm Saturday 8 July.
There is a closure of the southbound pedestrian pathway and bicycle lane on Spring Street between Bourke Street and Little Collins Street during this time.
A short detour and traffic management will be in place to ensure the safety of pedestrians and road users.
Riders who use Wellington Parade South to access the CBD should be aware that the gate into the rail corridor at 293 Wellington Parade South, East Melbourne, will be used to deliver construction materials and machinery during July, and until late 2023.
The Victorian Government is delivering upgrades to the City Loop to improve the management safety systems in the case of an emergency in the underground rail system. These works include upgrading modern smoke detection, extraction and sprinkler systems at Flagstaff, Melbourne Central and Parliament stations.
