Grattan Street West at the Royal Melbourne Hospital will partially re-open to traffic from next Tuesday.
The route, once a busy bike link to Melbourne University and the Parkville medical precinct, has been choked off during construction of the new underground station underneath Grattan Street east and west.
The Grattan Street eastbound lane, between Flemington Road and Royal Parade/Elizabeth Street, will temporarily re-open to maintain hospital drop-off/ pick-up and access for emergency services, replacing the U-turn manoeuvre.
Bike riders will be able to travel eastbound on Grattan Street from Flemington Road and turn left onto Royal Parade. Note that there will be no right-hand turn onto Elizabeth Street from Grattan Street.
Riders will need to take care as works continue in the precinct and emergency vehicles will use the street.
The footpath on the corner of Grattan Street and Royal Parade, in front of the Royal Melbourne Hospital, will re-open and the northern, east-west pedestrian crossing at the intersection of Royal Parade and Grattan Street will re-open.
The Grattan Street westbound lane, between Flemington Road and Royal Parade/Elizabeth Street, will remain closed.
A dedicated westbound emergency vehicle lane will open on Grattan Street, between Flemington Road and The Royal Melbourne Hospital
Patient drop-off/pick-up and short-term parking will be maintained on the northern side of Grattan Street
The Parkville Station will move into the final phase of construction and works will include service relocations, footpath, kerb and road pavement construction, traffic signal modifications, and the installation of bus stops.
Works on the southern side between Flemington Road and Royal Parade will follow.
Traffic management and signage will be in place to safely direct vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians around the work area.
Other Metro Tunnel works may result in additional changes to how pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles use the area.
Monday to Friday construction activities are from 7am to 6pm, with night works from 6pm to 7am (as required). Saturday work hours are from 7am to 1pm.
