The popular city bike route along Flinders Lane will be closed for eight weeks over summer.
Metro Tunnel Project will install utilities for the new underground station and build pedestrian entrances to the station from the laneways that connect to Flinders Lane.
The street, lanes and footpaths will also be resurfaced and the footpath will be widened on the southern side of Flinders Lane.
Work will begin on 15 January and extend between Swanston Street and Royston Place until mid-March.
Riders westbound will be required to detour via Flinders Street or Collins Street.
Deliveries within the closed area, including by bike, will be possible under traffic management.
When the Metro Tunnel is complete, there will be access from Town Hall Station to street level on both sides of Swanston Street, from both the City Square site on the east side and from the block between the the Nicholas Building and Young and Jacksons on the west side, known as Flinders Quarter.
Both Cocker Alley and Scott Alley will become station entrances at Flinders Quarter, while Royston Place will become a service point for the station’s waste facility.
As the Metro Tunnel Project continues to fit out stations, underground works are ramping up at surface level. Temporary structures such as gantries, sheds, and cranes will be disassembled, followed by the rebuilding of the streets.
These works will go on throughout 2024, with a sharp peak in April when the cranes at the City Square site are removed.
Not all of this work will be disruptive to bike traffic, but much will. Other works across the city such as tram works in Swanston Street and La Trobe Street will also affect to riders.
Bicycle Network is working with contractors and road management authorities to devise workable detours and traffic management arrangements, and will be publishing details over the coming weeks and months.
Other Town Hall Station works will continue over summer, including the reinstatement of the Flinders Street pedestrian crossing between Federation Square and St Paul’s Cathedral.
Concrete panel deliveries will require the partial closure of Flinders Lane between Russell and Swanston Streets for two days early this month.
At Flinders Square, works will take place on Sunday 10 December to swap the current tower crane to a new tower crane. These works will take place from 7am to 6pm and require some short-term closures of the Flinders Street northern footpath at the site entrance.
