The on-road west-bound bike lane on Somerville Road between Whitehall Street and Hyde Street in Yarraville will be closed for several weeks during February.

But the shared path immediately beside it will remain open in both directions, as will the east-bound on-road bike lane, alongside Yarraville Gardens.

The closure is due to works by the West Gate Tunnel Project to reconstruct a manhole in the intersection at Whitehall Street, under which is located the North Yarra Main Sewer, one of Melbourne’s major sewerage structures.

Regular riders through the area will recall major disruptive works at this location in recent years as the sewer has been realigned due to the construction of the West Gate Tunnel.

The closures are scheduled to start at 9pm on Wednesday 7 February and finish at 5am on Saturday 24 February 2024.

Note that these works will not permit use of the pedestrian crossing over Somerville Road on the side of northbound travel on Whitehall Street. There will still be access to cross Whitehall Street and Somerville Road on the southbound side.

If you are using Whitehall Street route, use the signalised crossings aligned with the shared paths on Whitehall Street and Somerville Road. Riders are advised the on-road bike lane on Somerville Road will be closed during the works.

From next Monday, the M80 Trail will be closed along a stretch through Bundoora and Greensborough on weekdays and Saturday mornings until mid-March.

The closure is between Plenty Road and the Macorna Street Bridge, which will remain open to riders.

A signed detour will be in place and will take riders a short distance along Plenty Road to Enterprise Drive and then to Linacare Drive, where paths will connect to the M80 Trail to the east, and to the Macorna Street Bridge.

The work is part of the M80 Ring Road completion being delivered by contractors for the North East Link Project.

The works will identify underground services and take ground samples from beneath roads, footpaths and grassed areas as part of planning for future construction.

The following activities are required to carry out these works:
– installing fencing around temporary worksites
– placing traffic and safety signage near worksites and detour route
– cutting, digging and drilling to investigate ground conditions
– restoring worksites to existing conditions on completion of investigations.

Day works will happen from 7am to 6pm, Monday to Friday and 7am to 1pm, Saturday.

Swanston Street to close again in February https://bicyclenetwork.com.au/newsroom/2023/12/20/swanston-street-to-close-again-in-february/ Tue, 19 Dec 2023 23:52:26 +0000 https://bicyclenetwork.com.au/?p=36381 A second tram track upgrade — this time in the Melbourne University precinct — will again disrupt bike riders on the busy route in the new year.

The post Swanston Street to close again in February appeared first on Bicycle Network.

]]>
Update Wednesday 10 January: The works outlined in this article have been extended and will now be completed at 5am, Sunday 23 February.

A second tram track upgrade on Swanston Street—this time in the Melbourne University precinct—will again disrupt bike riders on the busy route.

Swanston and Elgin streets will be fully closed while Yarra Trams and the PTV replace tracks and powerlines that have reached the end of their lifecycle.

The work will be underway from 9pm on Friday 2 February, to 5am on Thursday 23 February and will be finished when university starts the following week.

The works follow the earlier tram track project at the intersection of Swanston and La Trobe streets at the beginning of January.

The project involves both tram track and power line works in two different sections of the street and will have differing impacts on riders.

The tram track replacement will be more disruptive with full closure of Swanston Street between Queensberry Street and Lincoln Square South and between Church and Elgin streets.

Elgin Street will be closed between Swanston and Cardigan streets.

These sections of Swanston and Elgin streets will have full kerb-to-kerb fencing and road closures.

The intersection of Grattan and Swanston streets will reopen on 6 February 2024.

Intersection of Queensberry and Swanston streets will remain open throughout the works enabling bike riders to use the Queensberry Street bike lanes.

Construction will be 24 hours a day.

The tram power line works will be less disruptive with traffic and bike lanes closed progressively along Swanston Street between Victoria and Queensberry streets and Lincoln Square South and Church Street.

Traffic and bike lanes will remain open between 7pm and 7am.

These works will be underway from 7am to 7pm, Saturday 3 February to Wednesday 22 February 2024 (day works).

Traffic management will be in place.

Bike riders would be wise to avoid Swanston Street during these works. There are multiple alternative routes around Carlton but be careful of displaced car traffic and drivers suffering from the usual degree of helplessness.

Two major bike routes will be closed for a week in early January as tram tracks at the intersection of La Trobe and Swanston streets are replaced.

The streets will be closed to all traffic from the evening of Tuesday 2 January until 5am on Thursday 11 January 2024.

La Trobe Street will be closed between Elizabeth and Russell streets.

Swanston Street will be closed between Little La Trobe and Little Lonsdale streets.

Traffic management and signage will direct traffic, although significant disruption can be expected.

Riders are advised to divert from these streets well in advance of the works zone and to use alternative routes to get around and through the CBD.

Footpaths will remain open around the works area. There may be temporary footpath closures around the works and local detours will be in place.

Businesses located around the works area will remain open and pedestrian access will be available at all times.

The works will be underway 24 hours a day. Activities include:

  • Kerb-to-kerb fencing along all sections of the site
  • Excavating the road surface and tram tracks
  • Installing new tracks
  • During the upgrade of the tram tracks the tram crossover at the intersection of La Trobe and Swanston streets will be relocated
  • Closure of the eastbound tram stop on La Trobe Street, opposite Melbourne Central
  • Installation of a new temporary eastbound tram stop, opposite RMIT
  • Widening the existing westbound tram stop, opposite State Library.

No block ID is set

Once the works are completed close out works such as permanent line marking may follow later.

The project is being undertaken by the Department of Transport and Planning, Yarra Trams and its contractors.

Later in the 2024 a major project to upgrade the tram stops in Latrobe Street will get underway.

Flinders Lane January closure https://bicyclenetwork.com.au/newsroom/2023/12/06/flinders-lane-january-closure/ Wed, 06 Dec 2023 04:55:03 +0000 https://bicyclenetwork.com.au/?p=36156 The popular city bike route along Flinders Lane will be closed for eight weeks over summer.

The popular city bike route along Flinders Lane will be closed for eight weeks over summer.

Metro Tunnel Project will install utilities for the new underground station and build pedestrian entrances to the station from the laneways that connect to Flinders Lane.

The street, lanes and footpaths will also be resurfaced and the footpath will be widened on the southern side of Flinders Lane.

Work will begin on 15 January and extend between Swanston Street and Royston Place until mid-March.

Riders westbound will be required to detour via Flinders Street or Collins Street.

Deliveries within the closed area, including by bike, will be possible under traffic management.

When the Metro Tunnel is complete, there will be access from Town Hall Station  to street level on both sides of Swanston Street, from both the City Square site on the east side and from the block between the the Nicholas Building and Young and Jacksons on the west side, known as Flinders Quarter.

Both Cocker Alley and Scott Alley will become station entrances at Flinders Quarter, while Royston Place will become a service point for the station’s waste facility.

As the Metro Tunnel Project continues to fit out stations, underground works are ramping up at surface level. Temporary structures such as gantries, sheds, and cranes will be disassembled, followed by the rebuilding of the streets.

These works will go on throughout 2024, with a sharp peak in April when the cranes at the City Square site are removed.

Not all of this work will be disruptive to bike traffic, but much will. Other works across the city such as tram works in Swanston Street and La Trobe Street will also affect to riders.

Bicycle Network is working with contractors and road management authorities to devise workable detours and traffic management arrangements, and will be publishing details over the coming weeks and months.

Other Town Hall Station works will continue over summer, including the reinstatement of the Flinders Street pedestrian crossing between Federation Square and St Paul’s Cathedral.

Concrete panel deliveries will require the partial closure of Flinders Lane between Russell and Swanston Streets for two days early this month.

At Flinders Square, works will take place on Sunday 10 December to swap the current tower crane to a new tower crane. These works will take place from 7am to 6pm and require some short-term closures of the Flinders Street northern footpath at the site entrance.
