This year’s Great Vic Bike Ride took in a just a small slice of Gippsland, but given this region is the size of Switzerland and sits right on Melbourne’s doorstep, we reckon it’s a top contender for your 2024 travel wish list! Gippsland boasts abundant cycling trails, untouched beaches and world-class National Parks, linked together with a network of food and drink loving villages to welcome you with open arms.

East Gippsland

East Gippsland’s twinkling jewel, the Gippsland Lakes are Australia’s largest inland waterway, covering more than 400 square kilometres! With hundreds of kilometres of shoreline, a laidback boating vibe and an abundance of fresh seafood, there’s so much to see and do. Whether you’re chasing the bustle of Lakes Entrance, Paynesville’s fine dining and easy access to Raymond Island koala spotting, or effortlessly cool Metung, home to the new Metung Hot Springs – you can take your pick of charming lakeside towns in which to base yourself.

Just 45 minutes’ drive from Lakes Entrance, you can explore the underground wonderland of the Buchan Caves – a spectacular network of limestone caves, underground pools, stalagmites and stalactites. There are two caves open for guided tours: Royal Cave is known for its glassy calcite-rimmed pools and Fairy Cave is laced with intricate stalactites and stalagmites. Guided tours of both caves run daily and are best booked ahead of time via the Parks Victoria Buchan Caves website.

Central Gippsland

Tarra Bulga National Park is cool temperate rainforest of towering Mountain Ash, giant tree ferns and elusive Lyrebirds, the park is a stone’s throw from the historic fishing village of Port Albert and the mural town of Yarram. There are several short walks to enjoy, with favourites including the stunning Tarra and Cyathea Falls, or The Corrigan Suspension Bridge which stretches across the rainforest canopy, offering spectacular views of the fern gully on the forest floor below.

Did you know Gippsland boasts one of the longest uninterrupted sandy beaches in the world? The 90 Mile Beach stretches as far as the eye can see in all its wild, golden glory. This largely untouched beach is popular for camping, swimming, fishing or just endless strolling around the tiny coastal hamlets of Woodside Beach, Seaspray, Golden Beach and Loch Sport.

South Gippsland

Gippsland is renowned for its amazing nature-based experiences. Wilsons Promontory National Park, or ‘The Prom’ as it’s affectionately known, offers some of the best ways you can get out amongst nature exploring the hiking trails, cruising to ancient rock formations, getting close to the wildlife or just soaking up some time on the beautiful beaches.

Gippsland is a cyclist’s dream – it has more rail trails than any other region in Australia! The Great Southern Rail Trail runs for an epic 109km (one way) from Nyora to Port Welshpool. Passing through lush farmland, over bridges and taking in views of Wilsons Promontory. This trail is best broken into a multi-day ride allowing plenty of time to explore some of Gippsland’s best food, drink and arts villages along the way such as Loch, Korumburra, Leongatha, Koonwarra, Meeniyan, Fish Creek, Foster, and Toora. Be sure to plan a side-trip to Agnes Falls, which cascades 59 metres over rocks into a deep gorge below.

Bass Coast

Pearl of the Bass Coast, Inverloch is a thriving holiday destination, just perfect water activities such as swimming, boating, fishing and surfing. The charms of this hamlet stretch well beyond its dashing coastline, with its laid-back vibe, welcoming community, a cornucopia of eateries and two of Gippsland’s most popular wineries for wiling away an afternoon.

Leave your bike at home and take on the incredible George Bass Coastal Walk, which stretches 7km from San Remo to Kilcunda (2 hours, one-way). This dramatic cliff top walk offers breathtaking scenery across Bass Strait, taking in rugged coastline, woodland gullies, pristine beaches and iridescent green hills peppered with happy cows. The walk finishes in Kilcunda, where you can reward yourself with lunch from the locals’ favourite Kilcunda General Store café, or settle in for a rewarding ale at the Kilcunda Ocean View Hotel.

There are endless adventures to be had in Gippsland, it really is all kinds of wonder.

The lanes of the Princes Freeway are being swept, ready for the 7000-plus riders joining United Energy Around the Bay this Sunday 8 October.

Bicycle Network promised big changes to the iconic event this year, including a closed lane of the freeway and reduced vehicle speed limits to 60km/h, to ensure the safety of 2000 riders participating in The Classic (220km) and 300km distances.

Maintenance crews from the Department of Transport and Planning have worked overnight this week, despite weather conditions, to clear more than 30km of the three-metre emergency lane along the freeway and the southern side of the Bay, from the ferry at Sorrento to Albert Park.

Bicycle Network CEO Alison McCormack says riders will be thrilled.

“In our post-2022 ride survey, we asked for feedback and riders told us they wanted to avoid punctures and safer freeway conditions. They insisted, and we listened. This year’s event will be the best one yet.”

Other changes this year include:

  • Revised rest stops on the 300km route (with additional nutrition) to ensure riders get fuel when they need it most.
  • Our first Ciclovia de Bogotá-style event, the Family Ride, which will take place on a closed circuit around Albert Park Lake.

United Energy Around the Bay has been a premium event on the Melbourne calendar for three decades and is the only day of year where you can ride fully supported around Port Philip Bay.

With seven different options, including a 135km Geelong start, it’s not too late to sign up today.

Bicycle Network has partnered with Farmers Pick to support their efforts against food waste during United Energy Around the Bay on Sunday 8 October.

Farmers Pick will supply 8000 bananas to the thousands of riders participating in all distances on the iconic event.

The food sustainability organisation says single bananas are being rejected by supermarkets when they are not attached to a bunch, creating waste on farms and costing consumers.

Farmers Pick co-founder Josh Brooks-Duncan says Australian bananas were the most expensive in the world at $4.50 a kilogram last month.

“Major supermarkets, Woolworths and Coles only purchase 70 per cent of Australian bananas and the remaining 30% are rejected because they are considered the wrong size, an imperfect shape, not the right shade of yellow, or simply because they are a single banana that’s come loose from the bunch,” Brooks-Duncan says.

Bicycle Network CEO Alison McCormack says riders will use the Farmers Pick bananas to fuel themselves during the event.

“We have been running this event for more than 30 years and we absolutely love working with Farmers Pick,” says Ms McCormack.

“Their passion for sustainability and promoting healthy eating really aligns with our bike members so it was a no-brainer to support their banana farmers during their time of need.

“We are sure the kids and families on our rides around Albert Park Lake will demolish their share of bananas and riders on the 100km, 135km, Classic and 300km distances will need a bit of extra sustenance too. It’s an absolute win-win.”

Farmers Pick has worked with local farmers since 2020. It aims to reduce waste by rescuing “imperfect” fruit and vegetables, offering Australians cheaper access to fresh produce and changing the decision-making process of corporate supermarkets.

The 2023 edition of the United Energy Around the Bay was launched at Kerferd Road Pier in Albert Park this morning with a suite of exciting changes that promise to make it the best one yet.

For the first time since 1993, participants of the United Energy Around the Bay will enjoy a closed lane of the Princes Freeway in a tremendous boost for rider safety and enjoyment. Freeway speeds will also be limited during the event.

This will be a game-changer for riders of ‘The Classic’ route and the challenging 300km option.

Those taking part in the Family Ride will also enjoy more peaceful pedalling, with fully closed roads around Albert Park Lake to offer riders of all abilities a separated route for traffic-free family fun.

In addition to these safety measures, Bicycle Network is delighted to bring the start line back to Geelong for the 135km route.

“These changes are the direct result of invaluable feedback provided by our members and we’re thrilled to bring them to life for the 2023 United Energy Around the Bay,” says Bicycle Network CEO Alison McCormack.

Excitement levels were high at the launch event in Albert Park this morning, where Olympian Simon Gerrans and the voice of cycling Matt Keenan recalled tales from previous Around the Bays and spoke of the event’s unique ability to bring the bike riding community together.

Former AFL footballer Brendan Fevola and AFLW footballer Deanna Berry, official ambassadors for charity partner Maddie Riewoldt’s Vision, were in attendance, sharing their excitement for the upcoming event.

Bicycle Network is thrilled to be teaming up with Maddie Riewoldt’s Vision as a charity partner for United Energy Around the Bay for the next three years.

The two health charities are aligned in their purpose of improving the health of Australians and are enthusiastic about what they can achieve together.

“Every three days, a person is diagnosed with Bone Marrow Failure Syndrome, many of them children and young people; tragically, 50% will not survive,” says Amy Coote, CEO of Maddie Riewoldt’s Vision. “This partnership will change lives, helping Maddie’s Vision fund much-needed research and support for patients and families living with these life-threatening conditions.”

“United Energy Around the Bay is an iconic event that’s enjoyed by thousands and it’s great to be part of it,” says United Energy’s General Manger of Network Services James Walker. “At United Energy, we are pleased to be able to support the events that are important to the communities we serve. We are part of the community and every day we have teams working across the region supporting reliable power.”

The Newcrest Orange Challenge is set to return to the majestic tablelands of New South Wales and the pieces are locked in place for a stellar springtime event.

Set in the historical township of Orange and surrounding countryside on Sunday 10 September, the 2023 Newcrest Orange Challenge invites riders to test themselves across either the 88km or 170km distances, which will begin and end in the city centre.

Gruelling climbs, swooping descents and rolling hills will ask even the hardiest of riders to dig deep, while variable road surfaces are sure to keep them on their toes.

The reward? Car-free country roads, breathtaking views of stunning valleys, mountains and vineyards and the satisfaction that comes only from a truly demanding day on your bike.

Bicycle Network will be beside you for the fully supported ride, providing rest stops, nutrition, medical and mechanical assistance – leaving you to enjoy the journey.

An event village will be set up with entertainment and act as a hub for social and kids rides. It will also host a meet-and-greet with Bicycle Network CEO Alison McCormack.

“The Newcrest Orange Challenge is a one-of-a-kind event and our team is determined to make the 2023 edition the best one yet,” says Bicycle Network CEO Alison McCormack. “Whether you’re testing yourself on the bike or just joining in the festivities in this beautiful part of the country, it’s shaping up to be an unforgettable weekend.”

There is plenty on offer for those not taking part in either of the challenge rides. Orange is brimming with character and history and its attractions include gorgeous gardens, diverse art galleries, walking trails and award-winning restaurants.

The area’s cool climate and rich soils lend themselves to acclaimed wine, produce and gourmet delights, too.

Bicycle Network is thrilled to be back in the region running the 2023 Newcrest Orange Challenge. The event is sponsored by Newcrest Mining’s Cadia Valley Operations and is proudly supported by the NSW Government through its tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW.

Participation numbers climbed steadily each year since Bicycle Network became involved in 2016. The pandemic sidelined the event and stalled its momentum in 2020, but the stage is now set for a spectacular return.

In April 2023, a new light exhibition called the Light Towers will open at Kings Canyon resort in Watarrka National park, and participants of the Great Outback Escape (29 April – 6 May) will be among the first to experience it.

The exhibition, created by artist Bruce Munro, features 69 towers taller than an average human made up of approximately 220 glass bottles filled with solar fibre optic cables.

The theme of the installation is “from sunrise to sunset,” inspired by the book Gifts of Unknown Things by Lyall Watson.

The sound element of the installation will be created from voices of different cultures and ways of singing, symbolising unity.

The Light Towers exhibition is a result of a multi-million-dollar partnership between Munro and the Kings Canyon resort, facilitated by the G’day Group, which runs accommodation services at the resort.

Great Outback Escape riders will have the chance to visit the installation for the sunrise session before a enjoying a morning pedal to Kathleen Springs and Kings Creek Station.

The Light Towers comes off the back of the success of Munro’s previous installation the Field of Light, which riders will explore just one day later before watching the sunrise from a viewing platform with the backdrop of Uluru over breakfast.

Munro believes the installations are emotionally and spiritually connected, making it an even more special experience for riders on the Great Outback Escape.

The Great Outback Escape is a fully-supported 8-day bike riding holiday through Australia’s Red Centre from 29 April – 6 May 2023. The Light Towers are just one of the many special activities riders have the can experience on this premium adventure.

Landslip cancels Peaks Challenge https://bicyclenetwork.com.au/newsroom/2023/02/02/landslip-cancels-peaks-challenge/ Thu, 02 Feb 2023 00:32:15 +0000 https://bicyclenetwor1.wpengine.com/?p=31897 Australia’s legendary Alpine bike riding event, Peaks Challenge, has been cancelled for this year due to the landslip at Falls Creek.

The post Landslip cancels Peaks Challenge appeared first on Bicycle Network.

]]>
Australia’s legendary Alpine bike riding event, Peaks Challenge, has been cancelled for this year due to the landslip at Falls Creek.

The Department of Transport and Planning announced today that with the massive slip still not arrested, and further stormy weather predicted for the coming days, the Bogong High Plains Road would remain closed for public safety.

The closed road, near Falls Creek Village, is part of the Peaks route, and a vital operational link for the event.

Almost 2000 riders, event suppliers and partners, and especially the local Falls Creek community, will be devastated by the news.

The Peaks Challenge was a summer highlight for the Alpine region, and a significant economic out-of-snow-season boost.

Since the first Peaks event in 2010, Bicycle Network, has worked closely with the Alpine community, resorts management, road and tourism authorities and the state government to build Peaks Challenge into an internationally recognised premier cycling event.

Major Road Projects Victoria has been undertaking geotechnical investigations at the 100-metre wide and 70-metre-high – and still moving – landslip and has exhaustively explored options for keeping the route open.

Bicycle Network has also explored alternative options for the event, but none of them met the criteria that riders, the community and stakeholders of Peaks Challenge expect.

Bicycle Network Chief Executive Alison McCormack said today: “We recognise this is a significant blow to all riders. We know the commitment it takes to train and prepare for this event, and I want to take this opportunity to thank you for sticking with us.”

“In addition to the heartbreak we are all feeling, we’d also like to recognise the extended implications this has for the local Falls Creek community.

“Peaks Challenge was set to provide a desperately needed economic boost for them and serve as a major milestone in their recovery efforts, however, they now face extended uncertainty around access to their community.

“We ask that riders registered for the event keep this in mind when contacting them regarding your accommodation.

“Bicycle Network is determined to bring back the event next year, better than ever, and looks forward to working with the Falls Creek community to make Peaks Challenge a highlight attraction in the Alpine landscape,” McCormack said.

The Minister for Industry and Innovation Ben Carroll and Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Jacinta Allan announced a $2.9 million package to provide service charge relief to Falls Creek businesses for a period of eight months.

Riders entered this year can rollover their entry to the 2024 event scheduled for Sunday 10th March 2024 or take a full refund.

Peaks Challenge is a 235-km loop starting/finishing at Falls Creek, with more than 4000 metres of climbing accumulated along the way. Set among the beautiful Victorian Alps, riders tackle three infamous climbs – Tawonga Gap, Mount Hotham and the back of Falls Creek – and have 13 hours to get it done.

Make the most of Gippsland’s hospitality along The Weekender route by exploring our favourite foodie finds including, coffee, cake and bakery stops!

While the ride is fully supported with lunch and nutrition stops on-route, if you’re looking for an extra treat or to explore the local area and support local communities this list is for you! We’ve even incorporated a cheeky pit stop at Burra Brewing Co micro brewery.

Day 1

Inverloch

After the first 36km of ride you will be ready to enjoy a coffee stop and what better way to enjoy your morning coffee than soaking up the coastal views in Inverloch.

Our top picks are The Local on William St for coffee, or if you are looking for your first taste of country hospitality head over to Paul the Pieman Bakery on Abeckett St. With an array of silver medals in ‘The Official Great Aussie Pie Competition’ our personal favourites were chunky beef or honey chicken. If a pie isn’t your thing check out Vaughans Café and Deli just around the corner on Abeckett St for something a little more gourmet.

Gelato al mare on William St serves up refreshing smoothies, shakes, juices, and sweet treats and of course gelato. If you’re feeling organised (and indulgent) you could pre-order one of their Morning Tea grazing boxes to takeaway and enjoy before heading off on the next leg of Day 1.

Wonthaggi

Wonthaggi is just past the halfway mark and a great spot to fuel up before tackling the main hills for the day. Pop into Little Wren Sandwich Bar on Graham Street for a cheese and ham toastie. Or if you weren’t ready for something more substantial when you passed through Inverloch The Coffee Collective, on McBride Avenue, gets our vote for brunch (and whilst you’re there it will be hard to resist one of their homemade doughnuts!)

A short 1.5km detour along Andersons Inlet Road between Kongwak and Korumburra is The Prom Country Cheesery and worth a stop. Here they handmake a range of traditional cheeses including natural-rinded semi-hard cheese, soft cheese, marinated and blues, pop in for a taste or look out for their range in the local area.

Korumburra

With 25km left for the day you might be ready to enjoy a cold one at Burra Brewing Co micro brewery as you enter Korumburra. Rolling Hills Korumburra on Bridge Street is the place for a burger or check out the ‘Coffee and Sweet Deal’ of the day at Luscious Café on Commercial Street. Take the time to enjoy the hazy glow of the afternoon and appreciate the beautiful Gippsland scenery before the final 100m of elevation and down hill roll back down to camp for the evening.

Leongatha

Enjoy the campsite or explore our host town of Leongatha for dinner. Serafino’s Pizza on Blair Street is a popular choice, the ‘Jules’ or ‘Henpecker’ caught our eye – we’ll let you continue the pineapple on pizza debate! Check out Chao Phraya Thai River Restaurant on Smith Steet, or Bair’s Otagao Hotel will hit the spot with a hearty parma and a pint.

Day 2

With some rewarding climbs and beautiful Gippsland views our cake and coffee recommendations will be very welcome on Day 2 of The Weekender.

Leongatha

If you are looking to fuel up in town before you roll-out, Leongatha has a plethora of cafes. We opted for a sweet potato waffle from Shady Oaks Cafe but the breakfast toastie from Sweet Life Café and Cakes or homemade crumpets from Number 9 Dream Café (only open on Saturday morning) on Bair Street also caught our eyes!

Mirboo North

After a stunning ride along the Grand Ridge Road you will be ready for a lunch stop in Mirboo North. Lamezleigh’s Café on Ridgeway was our top pick. Serving up St Ali coffee and a seasonal menu of breakfast, lunch and everything in between it’s a delight.

If you’re on the bakery trail, stop by the Strzelecki Bakery just up the street for a pie or bacon and egg roll.

Dumbalk

Following a downhill stretch you will find yourself cruising into Dumbalk, the last country town on the ride. A short 3km detour will get you to Blue Tree Honey Farm. Overlooking the Tarwin River you can enjoy some honey ice cream, a devonshire tea or a slice of homemade cake whilst overlooking the stunning valley before setting off on the last 20km home to Leongatha.

As you return to Leongatha you may like to enjoy a late lunch in the local area before heading home and back to reality.
