Final designs of Barneson Blvd, Darwin
Barneson Boulevard set for bike-friendly make-over

One of Darwin’s key commuter routes, Barneson Boulevard, is set to be transformed into a vibrant place for people with the addition of a separated bike path.

Barneson Boulevard is set to benefit from the addition of new separated inbound and outbound cycle paths, creating a new entry point to Darwin’s CBD.

The development which includes additional greenspace, shade and public art, will create a more livable space for the community and create better links for people who ride.

The landmark project also involves the duplication of Tiger Brennan Drive from Dinah Beach Road to Mcminn Street, connecting directly with Cavenagh Street and allowing for a more even distribution of traffic throughout CBD streets.

According to the NT Government website, “creating and growing a shaded boulevard is essential to this project and will create a cool streetscape with excellent pedestrian and cyclist linkages into the CBD.

Darwin residents are being invited to have their say on the on the kind of greenery and opportunities for public art that they’d like to see adorn the roadside before Monday 9 October. Click here to have your say.

In May 2016, the Australian Government announced a commitment of $29.53 million towards the project, in addition to $5 million from the NT Government and $5 million from the City of Darwin.

Works are expected to begin in late 2017, weather permitting.

Bicycle Network Chief Executive Officer Craig Richards said that the project, when completed, will be transformative for people who ride bikes in Darwin.

“Bike paths that separate people who ride from traffic are the gold standard for safety and convenience and will help create a vibrant and active streetscape,” Mr Richards said.

“The Barneson Boulevard project is a game-changer for Darwin —it’s a vital link that will make it easier for even more people to commute to the CBD by bike.”
