Victoria Street to close for tram track work

Victoria Street in Richmond will be closed to all traffic for more than a week from 10pm next Friday, 21 August for tram track renewal.

The closure is between Church Street and Burnley Street and extends until 5am on Sunday 30 August.

There will also be night-time closures of the Victoria Bridge.

Footpaths will remain open for local access.

Riders who usually use Victoria Street do have alternatives available, but a little complex navigation will be required.

And the many riders who use parallel Elizabeth Street as their main east-west through Richmond will also need to adapt their journeys due to the Victoria Street closure.

The best option seems to be to use Elizabeth and Baker Streets, and Coles Terrace to get through to Burnley Street.

For riders needing access north of Victoria Street then Nelson Street, Southampton Crescent and Governor Street may suit.

During the major works, tram routes 12 and 109 will be affected.

Access to shops and local infrastructure will remain unchanged during the works.

The work zone will be fenced off for safety and there will be kerb-to-kerb fencing which will limit pedestrian crossings.

Crossing points will be facilitated where possible and may change depending on the construction activities taking place.

There will be some preliminary works at the east end of Victoria Street in the days leading up to next Friday.

An added complication will be that Yarra Trams is taking advantage of the shutdown to renew overhead wiring on Victoria Bridge which connects Victoria St to Barkers Rd over the Yarra River. These works will be undertaken outside of peak periods to minimise additional disruption.

Victoria Bridge will be closed to all traffic with the exception of tram replacement buses and pedestrians from:
  • From 9pm Friday 21 August to 5am Monday 24 August, and
  • From 9pm Monday 24 August to 5am Wednesday 26 August.
Slow lane closures on Victoria Bridge:
  • Daily between 5am to 9pm from Monday 24 August to Wednesday 26 August.
