WA goes big on bike trails

The Western Australian Government pledged a whopping $20 million for bike trail projects earlier this week as part of a $150 million infrastructure and tourism upgrade.

The $20 million set aside for bike trails includes trail projects at Kalamunda and Mundaring in the Perth Hills, supporting the vision of creating a world class mountain biking culture in Western Australia.

Other major projects are planned in Albany, Denmark and Margaret River, with WestCycle putting together this handy breakdown of the announcement:

This is on top of the two major MTB projects already underway in Collie and Dwellingup which are set to become word-class trail riding destinations with stunning backdrops.

You can learn more about these two projects specifically at MTBWA.com.au

As well as a huge boost to tourism, Western Australia's investment in bike trails is set to keep a lot of locals happy, with the MTBWA website also highlighting the local appetite with the following statistics:

  • Almost 120,000 mountain bikes are purchased every year in Western Australia
  • 19% of Western Australians own a mountain bike
  • Over 50 competitive mountain bike events take place in Western Australia each year
