New passing mat available for use
For this year’s Road Safety Week, Bicycle Network and the Road Safety Advisory Council have produced a mat that can be rolled out at events to show people what 1 metre and 1.5 metre passing distances look like.
Similar mats have been used successfully by UK police to educate drivers and riders about passing distance laws. It shows the position of a bike rider in relation to a vehicle and the passing distances above and below 60 km/h.
The mat is available for any group to use at events as long as they pick it up from our Hobart office at 210 Collins Street or pay for a courier.
Launceston bike museum looking for vollies
A call has gone out to bike enthusiasts to revive a closed-down museum close to Launceston.
The family of Graham Austin have not touched the Ravenswood museum he created since his death in 2011, but would like to see it opened and enjoyed by more people.
With more than 300 bikes on display it could be just the location for a Launceston bike kitchen/collective?
Pinnacle Rd shutting for up to 4 days
The City of Hobart will close Pinnacle Rd for up to 4 days from Monday 23 November for urgent works, including stormwater and road surface repairs and vegetation clearance.
While tracks will remain open, people riding and walking will not be allowed on Pinnacle Rd where it's closed for maintenance.
The road will be shut at Bracken Lane on the first day and then from The Springs on the second to fourth days.
New MTB track news
A development application for close to 21 km of MTB trails at George Town has been lodged with George Town Council, representing the first stage of the proposed 79 km network.
Nine tracks on the slopes of Mt George comprise the first stage, with later stages on Mt George and Tippogoree Hills. Public comment on the proposal closes on 27 November.
And the City of Hobart has announced it intends to build two tracks in the first half of 2021 from its recently approved MTB plan.
The green-rated tracks would create a loop and join the North–South and Lenah Valley tracks to the Bracken Lane Fire Trail.
Hobart school throws support behind riding
We are so stoked by the enthusiasm of Bellerive’s Corpus Christi Catholic School to encourage more students to Ride2School and all the work they've done with us to encourage change.
They have undertaken our Ride2School workshops, developed an Active Travel map helping students pick the right route to school and installed new bike parking.
The students started their project after being involved in the Youth Climate Leaders Conference organised by Education for Sustainability Tasmania.

The park'n'rides will be at Huntingfield opposite the hardware store and Browns Road next to the Groningen Rd bridge.
Comment on the concept designs is being accepted until 2 December, and this will be used to inform the detailed designs.
