Wollongong Pop-Up Bike Fest
Pop-up bike fest in the Gong

The City of Wollongong is pedalling hard toward becoming a world class bike riding destination, with yet another event popping up next weekend to celebrate bikes and get more people riding.

The free pop-up cycling event will be held in Lang Park on Sunday November 29 from 10am until noon, hosted by the council, Ride Nation, Transport NSW, Cycling Tours NSW, and Illawarra Academy of Sport.

The event will provide tips and tricks for riding bikes around Wollongong and coincides with the llawarra Cycling Club Criterium being held at Flagstaff Hill.

This comes as the city is set to adopt the new Cycling Strategy 2030, recent commitments to the Cringila Hills mountain bike masterplan and of course hosting the 2022 UCI Road World Championships.

Wollongong Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery told the Illawara Mercury: "We know that confidence can be a big hurdle for people wanting to ride a bike.

"That's why we're holding this free event to encourage people of all ages to get on a bike and give cycling a go.

"Cycling is a great way to have fun with friends and family and we're delighted to provide the community with a chance to connect with some great local cycling programs and activities.

"It's also a great opportunity for us to raise awareness of cycling before we host the 2022 UCI Road World Championships in September 2022."

Wollongong 2022 CEO Stu Taggart added: "As we continue to look ahead to the 2022 UCI Road World Championships, we absolutely support initiatives that provide the Wollongong community with opportunities to experience and learn more about cycling."

The Wollongong Cycling Strategy 2030 states an aim to increase the weekly cycling rate from from 12.9 per cent to 20 per cent in the region by 2030.
