Get involved with Bike Week next year

Tasmanian Bike Week 7–14 March is a great opportunity to spread our love of bikes by staging events and activities to support and encourage more people to ride.

Bicycle Network usually runs activities in the south and north-west and if you’d like to get involved in organising an existing event or run your own activity, let us know! Just email bntsouth@biketas.org.au if you are available to volunteer and what time you have available.

Around Hobart we’ll be encouraging our social ride leaders to schedule a ride, including the monthly Women on Wheels ride, running the Kingborough Treasure Hunt and our north-west riders group will hold a Bike Week activity.

Coastal path needs shoring up

The new shared path between Latrobe and Ambleside will need another $291,000 from Latrobe Council because river bank erosion has increased since the first survey work.

The path is built into the river bank for most of its length, with shoring up of the bank needed to protect the long-term future of River Road as well as allow construction of the path.

Kingborough residents petition for bikes

A group of local residents tired of the poor connections in Kingborough Council

for people wanting to walk and ride, have launched a petition calling for better links between the new housing areas to Huntingfield, Kingston and local schools.

Pump tracks open and planned

West Tamar Council has opened a brand new, sealed pump track in Legana just in time for school holidays.

Pump tracks are used to hone mountain biking skills and are increasingly being nominated by young Tasmanians as the kind of activity they want in their local area.

And down the road in Burnie the winning tenderer for a new pump track RideMore has proposed an expanded design for the View Rd Reserve site, adding short MTB tracks.

The asphalt pump track is due to open to the public in March next year and the MTB tracks a few months later.

Discover Launceston via bike

Tamar Bicycle Users Group (TBUG) has launched a summer "cycleteering" challenge for Launceston, with 6 passes to the Aquatic Centre up for grabs.

You can download clues and answers from https://tamarbug.org.au and go into the running for a family pool pass by emailing a photo of yourself doing the challenge to contactus@tbug.org.au.

Wild Mersey adds another 15 km

The Wild Mersey mountain bike network is adding another 15 km of tracks from Badger Road in Sheffield, opening on Saturday 19 December.

This is the first release of the final stage of tracks to complete the network, with another 45 km to be finished by the end of 2021.

North-west infrastructure ask
People living in the Devonport City Council, Circular Head Council and Burnie City Council areas are invited to fill out a survey on infrastructure that helps them stay healthy.

The survey is part of the University of Tasmania's CAPITOL project which investigates critical ages where people can put on weight with the aim of preventing hospital stays.
