Bicycle Network is making the switch to compostable valet bags at Peaks Challenge Falls Creek 2021, saving thousands of plastic bags from going to landfill.
Valet bags are an important part of the gruelling 235 kilometre alpine ride, giving you the chance to access fresh and dry clothes, equipment, food and hydration.
The new bags are 100% compostable and offer the same strength, flexibility and protection from the elements as the old bags, but won’t harm the environment once the event is over.
You'll be able to pack your valet bags full to the seams and rip into them at rest stops without having to worry about harming the environment.
The bags are made from sustainable plant products including corn starch and other bio-based, biodegradable material.
Sustainability is important for Bicycle Network – one of the great things about bike riding is it's environmentally friendly, so it's important our events are too.
The reduction is single-use plastic at Peaks Challenge began in 2020 when sponsor banners at the start and finish line were attached with reusable ties – eliminating the need for hundreds of single-use plastic cable ties.
In 2018 a simple switch in dessert packaging at the Great Vic Bike Ride removed 20,000 single-use plastic pieces.
While we're working hard to reduce waste at Bicycle Network events, there are still some things that generate rubbish.
If you're riding Peaks Challenge Falls Creek, or any other Bicycle Network event, please recycle or properly dispose of any rubbish including energy bar, gel or drink packaging.
Sometimes these things get left beside the road which is not fair to the environment and our hosts who deserve to live in clean, green areas.
If you have any other ideas about how we can make our events more environmentally friendly, please feel free to let us know!
Peaks Challenge Falls Creek is on Sunday 7 March 2021 and tickets are now on sale.
