Several security projects continue along bike routes through he city requiring caution as increasing numbers of riders return to the CBD commute.
Collins Street outside of Southern Cross Station will get squeezed for bikes from Wednesday 27 January.
The eastbound bicycle lane between 664 Collins Street and Spencer Street (yellow line on map) will be closed.
Confident riders can merge into the traffic lane.
The other option is to walk your bike on the pedestrian detour (green line on map) down to Spencer Street. That requires a crossing of Collins Street as the footpath immediately outside the station will be closed. (See red line on map).
These detours will be in place until March.
City of Melbourne's security upgrade work around the Federation Square precinct is continuing, with steel bollards and bespoke concrete blocks already installed on Swanston Street and near ArtPlay.
These works around Federation Square and Birrarung Marr and are expected to be completed in March 2021.
Currently riders along the Yarra Trail on the north bank are enable to exit to Swanston Street at Princes Bridge. However access is available with a short walk of the bike through the Square immediately adjacent to Swanson Street.
Once completed, these works will result in improved conditions for bikes on Swanston Street between Flinders Street and Princes Bridge.
The upgrades are being developed by security experts and designers to provide a high level of safety, while preserving the character of the area and balancing the needs of all users, including pedestrians, motorists, cyclists, trams, businesses, emergency services and others.
These measures are part of a program of security enhancements being delivered by City of Melbourne in partnership with the Victorian Government and Victoria Police.
