Bay Trail detour alert
Bay Trail detour alert

The Bay Trail at St Kilda Beach will be detoured around a major worksite for the next year.

Melbourne Water contractors are about to start construction on the replacement of the Shakespeare Grove main drain outlet on St Kilda Beach.

The new pipe into the Bay is being designed as a major attraction for the beach and will feature a viewing platform.

The current pipe, and its replacement, cross under the Bay Trail just near the Donovans pavilion at the southern end of St Kilda Beach, over Marine Parade from Luna Park.

This necessitates traffic management and a short detour to take bike riders around the construction zone.

From mid-February 2021 to March 2021 preparatory works will get underway. Access for pedestrians and riders will be maintained but the route will change during this time, depending on work activities.

From March 2021 to early 2022 activities at the main worksite will be underway.

The map outlines the changes to pedestrian and cyclist routes during this time. Note that from time-to-time trucks will enter and exit the work area via Marine Parade.

There will be short delays to traffic on Marine Parade and shared user paths when vehicles and people are stopped to allow safe access.

There will be advance warning signage in the trail and bike riders are asked to take extra care due to the occasional sandy condition of the path at this location,

The project will ensure the Shakespeare Grove Main Drain continues to reduce the risk of flooding to the surrounding suburbs for many more years to come.
