Riders heading out of the city on St Kilda Road will benefit from an additional section of separated bike lane as far as the Shrine of Remembrance.
The City of Melbourne starts work this week on installing separation along the Domain parklands between Southbank Boulevard/Linlithgow Avenue and Tram Stop 19/Coventry Street.
The new lanes will connect to recently constructed separated lanes on Linlithgow Avenue and Southbank Boulevard.
The new St Kilda Road bike lane will be moved to the kerb and the car parking shifted out from the kerb.
Some car parking will be removed altogether, and other parking will be reserved at certain times for use by the Metro Tunnel project.
A length of the service road had already been reduced to one lane, so most of the route had adequate space available for the switch (see image above).
This project is part of a wider program to deliver 40km of new bike lanes across the city, in partnership with the Victorian Government.
The work should take little more than a week to complete, undertaken in stages.
The works will be staged to minimise impacts. While the new bike lanes are installed, the existing bike lane will be closed.
Riders will need to share a lane with other vehicles through the work zones during this period.
Other projects underway by the City of Melbourne include the north end of Spring Street. Exhibition Street from Bourke St to Victoria St is scheduled to start in Mid February while projects in Peel Street and Whiteman Street/Queensbridge Street will get underway in March and April respectively.
