The bike lanes in Laurens Street, North Melbourne, will be slimmer as the street is narrowed for works on the construction of the new underground Arden Station as part of the Metro Tunnel project.
The new station begins from Laurens Street, and services investigations and relocations are required, as well as construction of the new station entrance.
Works are expected to get underway from mid-March. The realigned street will be in place until the end of the 2023.
Rider numbers are low along the street currently because the route is blocked further along under Dynon Road where the West Gate Tunnel project is building a new bike bridge over the railway tracks.
The realignment will involve the installation of concrete barriers on the western side of Laurens Street, and the narrowing and realigning of traffic and dedicated bicycle lanes around the concrete barriers.
Sections of footpath and on-street parking will be closed, and the speed limit on Laurens Street will be reduced to 40 km/h for the duration of the realignment.
Laurens Street will be closed between Arden and Queensberry streets for approximately one day while traffic and dedicated bicycle lanes are realigned, with local diversions in place.
Any remaining works will be completed under a partial road closure or shuttle flow arrangement. Traffic controllers will be on site to direct traffic whilst realignment works take place.
On-street parking spaces on both sides of Laurens Street, from Arden Street to just south of Queensberry Street, will be closed.
A pedestrian crossing on Laurens Street will be installed south of Queensberry Street.
This will enable pedestrians to safely cross Laurens Street while a section of footpath is closed. Pedestrians use this route to get from North Melbourne Station to the North Melbourne Football Ground.
