The construction of a Metro Tunnel station entrance in Grattan Street outside the Royal Melbourne Hospital has resulted in changes to the routes riders take around the precinct.
Now that major works on the station entrance outside the Peter McCallum Cancer Institute on the southern side of Grattan Street are completed, contractors have now occupied the north side of the street outside the RMH, blocking traffic access.
People riding to and from Melbourne University and Parkville precinct are advised to use the upgraded shared path alongside Flemington Road and the south side of the cancer centre, inbound of Wreckyn Street, and then Royal Parade, or through to Pelham Street.
The Elizabeth Street/Royal Parade northbound service lane will also close from Haymarket Roundabout to just north of The Royal Melbourne Hospital.
Bike riders travelling northbound along Elizabeth Street/Royal Parade from Haymarket Roundabout will be directed into a new bicycle facility in the Elizabeth Street/Royal Parade northbound centre lane.
Traffic management and wayfinding signage will be in place to safely direct vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians around the work area.
These changes will be in place until late next year.
Riders should also remain alert in the Haymarket roundabout as a series of modifications to traffic lane layout may confuse drivers initially.
Pedestrian access will be maintained around the work sites, with localised diversions in place. Riders utilising pedestrians paths to access the area should walk their bikes.
Tram stop locations will remain the same but the 505 bus will not use the stop at the hospital. Bus routes 401, 402 and 403 are currently not servicing the Royal Melbourne / Grattan Street stop.
Hospital access will be maintained however, vehicles accessing Grattan Street from Flemington Road for the drop off/pick-up parking will be required to perform a U-turn and exit via Flemington Road
Taxi zones are located on Grattan Street and Flemington Road and access to the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre loading bay and drop-off/pick-up on Elizabeth Street will be maintained.
