Peel Street upgrade starts

Work installing protected kerbside bike lanes—and peak period bike lanes—on Peel Street, North Melbourne, starts on Sunday.

City of Melbourne contractors will be on the job between Haymarket Roundabout and Victoria Street for about two weeks.

Day works are being scheduled 9.30am to 3.30pm to avoid the morning and afternoon peak periods.

The existing bike lane, parking and one traffic lane will be closed while works are underway (day and night works).

These works are part of a broader program of work to fast-track the delivery of 40 kilometres of new bike lanes across the city being delivered in partnership with the Victorian Government.

The project will deliver kerbside protected bike lanes on both sides of Peel Street between Haymarket roundabout and Victoria Street while retaining existing painted bike lanes on the approaches to Queensberry Street and Haymarket roundabout.

The existing traffic lane configuration will be retained although there will be parking changes on both sides of Peel Street and in some surrounding streets.

Peel Street becomes Williams Street and is one of the key north-south links through the city with a crossing of the Yarra to the south and a connection to Royal Parade in the north.

As rider numbers continue to grow strongly, the shortcomings of the corridor had become a barrier.

Williams Street received a great upgrade as part of the new trams stops, and now Peel Street’s time has come.

Further upgrades to Peel Street south (Victoria to William Street) are scheduled for early/mid-April and the section from Queensbridge to Whiteman Street is scheduled for around the same time.
