Calling BMX and MTB enthusiasts

The Mornington Peninsula Shire has put the call out to BMX and mountain biking enthusiasts to help shape the future of recreational bike riding activities in the region.

Following a surge of interest from children and young people embracing bike riding activities in 2020, and many creating their own jumps and trails in local park lands, the council has appointed Leisure Planners to prepare a Recreational Mountain Bike and BMX Facilities Strategy.

And their first point of call is gathering feedback from the locals. They're asking BMX or mountain bike riders and enthusiasts to let them know what is important to you, and what locations you would consider to build potential dirt jumps, skills parks and pump tracks for the community.

The specific questions include:
  • What criteria should we use to select sites where bike activities can be located?
  • What sites or specific types of facilities should be a priority?
  • What should an ideal site include?
  • Are there any existing locations we could consider?
  • How can we support young people in building their own jumps at selective sites?
  • Do you have any other thoughts or comments?

You can learn more and provide your feedback here.

This is the first round of community consultation to inform the Strategy. The next round of consultation will take place mid-year and will provide the community an opportunity to comment on the draft Strategy.

Mayor Councillor Despi O'Connor said: "We noticed through the lockdown period that more and more locals were coming together embracing bike sports. Unfortunately, some of the jumps were built in sensitive environments or had been considered unsafe.

“We want your input in developing a Recreational Mountain Bike and BMX Facilities Strategy. This feedback will shape the future of this activity throughout our Shire and generate appropriate places where we can build them together.”
