City of Darwin MOVEMENT STRATEGY
Darwin gets moving

City of Darwin has launched its inaugural Movement Strategy in a bid to make it easier for people to get around Darwin while minimising the impact of transport on the environment.

The strategy will consolidate the Darwin Bike Plan, Darwin Parking Strategy and other existing plans to increase sustainable transport choices and improve streetscapes, infrastructure and connectivity.

“We want our movement network to be modern and sustainable, promoting an active city that is accessible and safe for all residents and visitors,” said Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis.

“Council wants to hear from the community about their movement preferences and how we can make it easier for people to walk, cycle, access public transport and use alternative modes of transport, including the use of electric vehicles, to inform the development of the strategy."

A SWOT analysis (strength, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) has been prepared by infrastructure, environmental and social development company Cardno for the city's movement strategy, analysing the current transportation landscape and identifying opportunities for Darwin to best meet demands of the future.

The analysis identifies gaps to be filled in the bike network including:

  • extending on-road bike lanes on Kitchener Drive to Darwin Waterfront
  • improving crossing facilities at the Stuart Highway / Snell Street / Bagot Road intersection
  • updating the on-road bike lane on Lee Point Road between McMillans Road and the Asche Street
  • developing a bike riding superhighway between key locations around Darwin
  • building safer routes for walking and cycling to schools

The council are currently seeking feedback from the community via an online survey, open until 5 May 2021.
