West Kernow Way
Mammoth new Cornish cycle route announced

With millions of Brits buying new bikes in 2020, and the prospect of international travel still a little sketchy in Europe, the new 150-mile (240km) cycle route in Cornwall has come at the perfect time.

Named the West Kernow Way, the stunning new route was announced by charity group Cycling UK last last month, who are planning to launch the route in September this year.

The route is expected to take four days to complete, taking in many of the highlights of the Cornish peninsula including the most westerly point of mainland England (Land's End) and the most southerly point of mainland Britain (Lizard Point).

Other attractions include the Botallack tin mines, the Bronze Age monument Mên-an-Tol and the island castle of St Michael’s Mount (featured above)

In an announcement on their website, Cycling UK said: “Cornwall’s climate makes it attractive for cycle touring and bikepacking outside of the traditional peak summer months. Cycling UK’s intention with our new route is to give people a reason to visit the county when it’s less busy. Not only is that a good opportunity to avoid the crowds and limit risk of infection, but it can also help encourage a more sustainable tourism programme which is year-round rather than concentrated in one peak period.”

Over the next two years Cycling UK intends to launch similar sustainable new off-season tourism experiences routes in Norfolk and Kent.

They are reportedly already working with the hospitality and accommodation sectors in these counties to provide businesses with free equipment and advice as part of their Cycle Friendly Places initiative.
