The Queensland government has now finalised plans for a $14.5 million ramp and elevated bike path that will take bike riders under and back on to the M1, safely away from O’Keefe Street.
A tender will be called soon and work will begin in the second half of 2022.
Brisbane will add another bike bridge at Woolloongabba to complement the Veloway 1 cycleway and connect the gaps in the city's growing commuter bike network.
The proposed $14.5 million bridge will be built across the O'Keefe Street intersection near Buranda train station, using a loop bridge structure to connect O’Keefe Street to Regent Street.
Greenslopes MP Joe Kelly said the new bridge will make it quicker and safer to ride into the CBD.
“There is a lot of foot traffic with commuters moving between the busway and Buranda Train Station, and that mixes with people on bikes that currently need to queue at the lights and cross at Carl Street.
“People walking, using wheelchairs and other mobility aids will have less interaction with people on bikes and more room to move,” said Kelly.
The community will have opportunities to give feedback and talk to the project team at consultation sessions throughout the coming weeks, including this evening at Buranda Village Shopping Centre.
Transport Minister Mark Bailey said "we want to hear from the community to ensure residents’ views and local knowledge are reflected in the design, which we expect to complete in towards the end of this year.”
Construction is set to begin in early 2022 and take about a year.
