Tasman Bridge signs highlight danger
New Cyclists Dismount signs and fluorescent orange detailing have gone up on the Tasman Bridge paths in the past month to highlight the danger involved in passing the gantries at either end of the paths.
These are advisory signs only so you don’t have to dismount, but hopefully they effectively warn new and visiting riders who are not aware of just how little space there is to pass by the gantries.
The government installed the sign and fluorescent detailing following requests from the family of the woman who was seriously injured in November last year when she came off her bike at one of the gantries.
Molle and Collins streets crossing up for comment
For anyone who has taken their lives in their hands trying to cross Molle Street in Hobart to get on or off the Rivulet Path: traffic signals are coming!
You have the chance to let City of Hobart know if you support a crossing with lights at this intersection by making a "representation" to the planning application before 21 May.

North East Rail Trail Appeal delayed
The North East Rail Trail extension appeal process has been delayed again.
People making an appeal were granted an extension in March, then the one remaining appeal was granted a 7-day extension; a full hearing was due on Friday 7 May, but that has also been delayed and a new hearing date has not yet been set.
The appeals are against the development application from Dorset Council that would allow work to start on the trail extension.
Separated cycleways trial gets up in Hobart
The Hobart City Council has approved its first on-road separated cycleways in a trial to go ahead on Campbell St (with connections to Argyle via Liverpool and Bathurst Streets) if the state government provides funding.
All councillors voted for the trial except Aldermen Zucco, Behrakis and Coats.
There is no date yet for installation of the cycleways which will provide separation through upright bollards.
Huonville Bike Collective opens up
The newly established Huonville Bike Collective is throwing its doors open on Saturday 5 June for an official opening and to thank the local community for its support in setting up at the Huonville PCYC in Wilmot Road.
The opening starts at 10.30 am followed by a sausage sizzle at 11 am. There will be rejuvenated bikes on sale and volunteers will be there to talk about their experiences so if you’re handy with an Allen key and are interested in helping it’s a good way to find out what’s involved.
