Moonee Ponds Creek Trail
Channel your ideas for a better Moonee Ponds Creek Trail

A morose stretch of the Moonee Ponds Creek Trail in Oak Park and Strathmore runs alongside a charmless concrete channel, optimistically known as a creek.

It could be a beautiful and serene route, attracting riders and walkers for a regular date with nature.

Now, there is a chance that the creek could be resurrected into a wonderful waterway, and bike riders have an opportunity to make a contribution.

Melbourne Water is seeking imaginative input on what might be achieved with a project to transform this 700 metre concrete channel.

The project goes far beyond thinking about the creek as merely a route for a trail. It could "reimagine the creek as a healthy, vibrant destination which supports native plants and animals, provides green space for leisure and recreation, and helps prevent flooding."

Melbourne Water is working with the Chain of Ponds Collaboration Group to reimagine a section of Moonee Ponds Creek to create a more appealing waterway, activate open space, enhance recreational opportunities along the creek and improve waterway health.

Bicycle Network was part of the Group that in 2018 developed the objective of transforming the creek into a waterway that Melbourne could be proud of in the same way as we relate to the Yarra River and other admired creeks in the metropolitan region.

Reimagining this section of the Moonee Ponds Creek will result in:
  • a more appealing creek side environment where people can interact with nature in a cooler, healthier environment
  • improved waterway health by slowing water flows and establishing aquatic and riparian vegetation
  • activating open space for the community to use and have access to improved biodiversity and habitat for native species.

Consultation has opened and you can have your say here.

Melbourne Water wants to know how you currently use the area, what you like and don't, and what are your ideas for future improvements. What would make you visit the area more often?
