CycleAbility spreads the benefits of biking

The Disability Trust's new CycleAbility program aims to see more people with disability experiencing the positive benefits of riding bikes.

While the sense of freedom and achievement gained by travelling from A to B on your bike may be taken for granted for many riders, people with a disability can find it incredibly empowering and supportive of independence, fitness and social inclusion.

The program, ran from The Disability Trust's head office in Wollongong, will focus on having fun, developing riding and safety skills and learning basic bicycle maintenance and repairs.

The program will take place on the last Saturday of every month, commencing May 29, 2021. Keep an eye on The Disability Trust website for more information.

Meanwhile, the chief operating officer at The Disability Trust, Ed Birt, recently rode 5500 kilometres across the country — ocean to ocean from Fremantle to Sydney — to raise money for the CycleAbility program.

Ed was participating in the epic Indian Pacific Wheel Ride Odyssey that saw him travel across the Nullabor to Adelaide, along Victoria's Surf Coast to Melbourne, and up through the Australian Alps and the Illawarra.

Raising over $10,000, the funds will go toward purchasing bicycles and equipment to help give people with a disability in Wollongong the opportunity to get out and about on their bike.

"It's just empowering to get from A to B under your own steam," he said after his massive accomplishment, alluding to the great cause of their new program.

Bulli's Resin Brewery also hosted a successful fundraiser this week to raise further funds for the program.
