The Gardiners Creek Trail is set for further improvement, with a section of the path between Burke Road and Elm Road in Glen Iris to be redone from this week.
The existing path in that section will be ripped up and rebuilt, including the construction of concrete edging and a fresh asphalt surface.
Improvements will deliver a shared path that is safe and comfortable for all, making the path consistent with other sections of the trail in terms of quality, width and pavement surface.
Work is being done by Stonnington council and will start on Monday 7 June at the Burke Road end. The project will continue progressively, finishing at Elm Road around 12 weeks later.
Detours will be set up around the work zone from Burke Road to the end of Elm Road where a path leads to the trail.
From Burke Road, the detour uses Howard Dawson Reserve, Park Road and Haynes Crescent on the north side of Gardiners Creek. You'll then be able to use Great Valley Road to cross the creek and hook on to Elm Road before re-joining the trail. See detour maps below.
The Gardiners Creek Trail is a key feature of Gardiners Creek (KooyongKoot) and a designated strategic cycling corridor.
City of Stonnington has developed a masterplan for the area to ensure its ongoing management and preservation now and in the future. This includes making sure the trail is consistent in terms of quality, width and construction.
Major improvements are also being made to the trail through Burwood and Ashwood (outside of the Stonnington area), which also includes widening a section of the path.
