Peak hour train trial for SEQ bike riders

People in South-East Queensland will be able to take their bikes on peak hour trains in a trial starting next month.

A six-month trial will begin on Thursday 1 July 2021, giving people more flexibility with their trips around SEQ and making it easier to swap car trips for bike rides.

There are many people who want to ride to work, but live a long way from their destination. Allowing bikes on trains means people can ride some of the way and also gives an alternative to driving to railway stations to catch a train.

It also means people can still ride to work in the morning when a classic Queensland storm is forecast for later in the day, rather than forcing them to drive both ways.

Bikes are currently allowed on SEQ trains during weekends, public holidays and non-peak times, however they are not welcome between 7:00am and 9:30am on citybound services or between 3:00pm and 6:30pm on outbound services.

The new rules allowing bikes on all trains at all hours are similar to those in Sydney and Melbourne where there are no problems with bikes stopping other passengers from boarding trains.

Bicycle Queensland had been actively campaigning for the rule change and wrote a letter supported by bicycle user groups to Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey.

Mr Bailey announced the change recently while also promoting a competition to get more people using public transport and travelling to the CBD.

A Golden Go Card can be won by people who public transport on a Friday during June, giving them a year of free trips on trams, trains, buses and ferries.
