Southern construction blitz challenges riders

A winter construction blitz on the rail projects in Edithvale, Chelsea and Bonbeach will cause significant challenges to riders in the southern suburbs over the coming weeks.

Buses will replace trains on the Frankston and Stony Point lines between Mordialloc and Frankston from 9pm Friday 25 June to 3am Monday 28 June 2021.

Works will be underway 24/7.

Trains will terminate at Mordialloc.

Commuters on bikes will not be able to ride to, lock up at, and catch trains at the stations south of Mordialloc.

Riders should be aware that bikes are not permitted on bus services, with the exception of folding bikes.

And the only folding bikes that meet the size criteria can be carried on buses. To travel on buses with a folding bike, your bike must not exceed 82cm long x 69cm high x 39cm wide or have wheel rims of more than 51cm in diameter.

Riders who know the local area and are confident of tackling local streets may choose to find their way to Mordialloc and board the train there.

However, riding through the station precincts is not advised.

Workers, vehicles and equipment will be onsite undertaking the works, with movement of piling rigs to work areas on Station Street and Nepean Highway.

Additionally, drainage and roadworks has closed Station Street, Bonbeach, between Bondi Road and York Street until 26 June, twenty-fours hours a day.

The Victorian Government is removing 18 level crossings and building 12 new stations as part of a $3 billion upgrade on the Frankston line.

From Edithvale to Bonbeach five level crossings will go and three new stations built.

New bike connections as part of these projects will make the trouble worth it.
