Launceston City Heart call for comment
Launceston Council is putting out concept plans to improve the streetscape of Paterson and St John streets, but cycling infrastructure doesn’t get a mention.
The plans cover Paterson Street between Charles and George streets and St John Street between Paterson and York streets.
The plans are part of the City Heart project which is designed to make the city more vibrant and accessible, but little has been included to date to make it easier for people of all ages and abilities to ride a bicycle.
There are face-to-face consultation sessions being held in different locations throughout the city between 14 and 26 August and you can submit comments online until 10 September via Your Voice Your Launceston.
Have your say on Prince of Wales Bay masterplan
Glenorchy City Council are asking for public comment on a new masterplan for Prince of Wales Bay that is proposing to improve connectivity through the area, including the Lutana Link we have been calling for using the disused rail corridor.
The master plan acknowledges that the disconnected footpath network and lack of infrastructure for riding needs to be fixed. It recommends the construction of the “Zinc Link” to connect the precinct to Glenorchy and the Cycleway and improvements to existing paths along the Goodwood forehore and connection to Elwick Bay.
Comments are being accepted until 23 August via the council website:
North East Rail Trail appeal to be heard
We’ve finally got a date for a full hearing for the appeal to Dorset Council’s extension of the North East Rail Trail: 16 August.
The Resource Management and Planning Appeal Tribunal will listen to the evidence from the person making the appeal and Dorset Council and then hand down its decision on a later date.
The basis of the appeal is that Dorset Council didn’t report on how it would stop pollution into nearby waterways when it crushed the rail ballast (large rocks) into a finer gravel for the path.
You can attend/listen to the hearing depending on whether the number of people meets their COVID-safe plan. More details of how to register to attend are on the tribunal website.
Collins and Molle Street lights get go ahead
The City of Hobart’s Planning Committee has approved the development application to build the long-awaited pedestrian lights at the corner of Molle and Collins streets in Hobart.
The lights will help the many people walking and riding along the Hobart Rivulet Path to get to and from the city cross busy Molle Street, especially in the morning peak.
Construction is due to start later this year, with the project funded by the City of Hobart and federal government’s Black Spot Program.
Davey Street resurfacing starting soon
While Davey Street is not a popular route for riding, some of us have little choice but to use it so please be aware that work will begin to rebuild and resurface the road between Murray and Molle streets on Sunday 29 August and continue until the end of the year.
Work will happen at night from 6.30 pm and finish at 6.30 am, Sunday to Thursday, leaving two lanes open at reduced speeds. It will leave uneven sections of the road during the day as they will be removing the current surface to install drainage, conduits and covers.
There is no date yet for the when the work on Molle to Antill streets will take place.
Devonport coastal pathway links
Devonport Council has started work on widening the footpath on River Road to continue the Coastal Pathway section from Latrobe.
The council has received federal funding of $807,863 to build the 820 metres of wider path from Bayview Avenue to Ambleside Place.
The wide path means the on-road painted lanes will disappear on that section of River Road.
