Northern trails review underway

The vision for the trail network across Melbourne’s north is to be updated, and you can help.

The Northern Regional Trails Strategy 2016  aims to establish a framework for the future development, prioritisation and maintenance of regional trails in the northern region of Metropolitan Melbourne.

The strategy is now being reviewed, starting with a survey of trail users about their experiences of the network and their hopes for the future.

You can take the survey here.

The purpose of the questionnaire is to determine who is already using the regional trail network, and why, to inform trail planning, delivery and management and potential improvements.

It also aims to determine who isn’t using the regional trail network, and the likely reasons why, with a view to determining potential trail improvement projects that will improve trail use and trail-based experiences.

The northern Metro region is already host to a number of key Victorian and national recreational trails, such as the Merri Creek Trail, Darebin Creek Trail, Upfield Rail Trail and Main Yarra Trail.

However, there is significant potential to further improve the connectivity, attractiveness and local, regional and national visitor numbers to the area.

There are a range of key tourist attractions in the region that the proposed trail network will serve and act as destinations to attract visitors.

You can take a look at the existing 2016 version of the strategy here.

The State Government recently announced funding for six new trails and trail extensions in Melbourne’s northern suburbs.
