Major Geelong bike path upgrades

A plan to duplicate the rail line through Geelong’s southern suburbs will also complete a major bike link from South Geelong to Waurn Ponds.

A total of 5km of new paths will fill in gaps in the network that mostly follows the rail line through Geelong.

It will result in improved links to public transport, better connections to existing and other proposed trails, and to new open space that will be provided as part of the project.

The project will also deliver four Parkiteer cages and more than 150 new bikes hoops as part of stations upgrades at South Geelong, Marshall and Waurn Ponds, with better bike connections in and around the station precincts.

New sections of the shared user path will include:
  • the length of Carr Street
  • Breakwater Road to Gundog Lane joining Barwon Heads Road along Station Road linking to Marshall Station
  • Marshall Station to Reserve Road, then linking to Surf Coast Highway
  • safety upgrades along Gundog Lane and South Barwon Reserve

The removal of the notorious Fyans Street level crossing at the roundabout should enable the development of a better bike trail alignment through the intersection, which also is the important connection to the Bellarine Rail Trail.

The Government says the new routes will be built to the latest standard for safety and attractiveness.

The bike route improvements will complement the new bike infrastructure than is currently being delivered as part of the Barwon Heads Road Duplication.

Rail Projects Victoria is inviting bike riders to have your say on the early concept designs for the South Geelong to Waurn Ponds Duplication.

You can have your say by completing the survey or giving your feedback using the interactive map.

You can also visit a virtual information room to find out more about the project.

The project is expected to cost more than one billion dollars once all the components are included.

The project also includes the preparation of a business case to determine the infrastructure required to deliver more services, including upgrades to the rail tunnel between Geelong and South Geelong and the rail line over the Barwon River.
