Tassie Bike News Bites
Glenorchy unveils new road look

Glenorchy City Council has finished work on its town centre street upgrades, resulting in a slower speed traffic environment and a few more bike hoops to lock onto.

Our intrepid Social Rides Leader Di checked it out this week and reported back that while there is no specific cycling infrastructure, it feels much nicer to ride in the centre of the traffic lane as cars are moving so much slower.

She found a few more bike parking hoops lock up to and mentioned there are more grills and poles to also lock bikes to.

E-bikes get a hearing at Estimates

A big thanks to Member for Nelson, Meg Webb MLC, for asking questions at the recent Tasmanian Budget Estimates session about the government’s support for electric bicycles.

Bicycle Network has made a couple of submissions to government urging more support for people to buy e-bikes as a transport alternative to driving.

While the Premier and then Climate Change Minister Peter Gutwein said he had not considered greater support for e-bikes, he committed to giving it further consideration. We’ll also be following it up with the new Climate Change Minister Roger Jaensch.

New underpass at Campbell Town

Campbell Town is getting a $6 million underpass under the highway so local residents can safely cross the road to get to the pool, tennis courts and ovals on foot, bicycle, scooter or mobility aid.

The ramp access will start on Bridge Street, where the district high school is, go under the highway and end just outside the pool and recreational grounds. Construction on the 3 metre wide underpass is expected to start on 12 October this year.

We’re helping Get Outdoors get rolling

The Get Outdoors Weekend is happening on 9–10 October and we’re providing a “come and try” social ride along the Intercity Cycleway in Hobart for budding riders.

The weekend is held by Get Outside Tasmania during Mental Health Week to promote the benefits of physical activities in the great outdoors.

Our free 20 km ride is on Saturday 9 October, leaving the Cornelian Bay car park at 10 am to head out to the end of the Cycleway at Claremont and returning about noon: https://ridewithgps.com/events/161237-get-outdoors-weekend
