Glenorchy may link sporting sites with shared path loop
Glenorchy City Council has released a masterplan and transport strategy covering its sporting sites which seeks to improve shared paths and build shared bridges to better connect the different precincts.
The documents are open for public comment until 22 January and include suggestions for pedestrian/cycling bridges over the Brooker Highway at the Hobart Showground and Goodwood Road and My State Bank Arena. Overpasses are also recommended over Elwick Rd for Intercity Cycleway users and over the cycleway at KGV Oval.
Other improvements include:
- upgrading and improving connection of the Barossa Creek path with a formalised crossing over Grove Road
- creating a “Glenorchy Loop” shared path that connects the Intercity Cycleway and riverfront paths
- new shared paths through the Showground and around KGV Oval to the pool
- better crossings over the Intercity Cycleway to access sites.

DerbyFest hits the trails in April
The delayed Derby Fest celebration of mountain biking has been scheduled for 23–24 April next year, and will be run over three years.
The festival was originally planned for 2020 but COVID-19 restrictions stopped it happening. It will include bicycle skills sessions, stunt and trick shows, competitions, bike shop and manufacturer stalls, food and drink and even some yoga!
A weekend pass is $45 for adults and $20 for children, or daily passes for $25 and $10, and camping sites can be booked for $40 for Friday and Saturday nights or $60 for Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.
Tasmanian Bike collective speads its wings
The Tasmanian Bike Collective is expanding again with a new site in Clarence Plains, it’s holding a bike sale in Huonville and is selling schmick looking jerseys and gloves at Roll Cycles (Hobart), Cyclingo (Mornington) and Ride Bellerive.
The Huonville sale is between 9 am and 12 noon on Saturday 18 December at the Huonville PCYC on Wilmot Road, with adult bikes available from $70 and children’s bikes from $50.
The Bike Collective helps young people learn bike mechanic skills to help them prepare for work and provide healthy recreational options.
Menzies Institute wants your cycling stories!

Macquarie Point cuts back blind corner
As part of the project to build a flight of stairs off the shared path up to the Cenotaph, Macquarie Point Corporation has cut back the embankment on the blind corner to improve sight lines.
People should still slow down as they ride downhill into the corner, but sight lines are now better than they were.
We are still working with the council and corporation to build a raised or platform crossing over the access road for shared path users.

New carbon-fibre inspection course targets mechanics
Local rider Michael Briggs has established a course and software for bike mechanics to help them inspect carbon fibre bicycles for hidden damage.
