A major upgrade of the Darebin Creek Trail is all but complete, with the trail fully open within the next few days.
The improvements—through Heildelberg West and Bellfield—are immediately noticeable and will be well worth exploring by bike during the coming holiday period.
There will be no more awkward detours.
Pavement quality is considerably improved over what was once rough, rutted and bulging with tree roots.
Some sections of the trail will be realigned to improve safety, sightlines and reduce blind corners.
The upgrade includes a 3m wide new reinforced concrete for the main trail, and 2.5m wide feeder paths.
Paths follow the existing alignment for the majority of the project area, however there are sections where the new path deviates to meet relevant building and accessibility requirements and standards.
New tree planting and revegetation is being undertaken done to offset any losses.
New retaining walls and fencing will also be constructed along sections of the trail.
Note that in some sections the fencing is still be finished due to delays with materials.
