Major traffic disruption continues as the notorious Fitzsimons Lane roundabout in Eltham is replaced with a new intersection.
The work is currently ahead of schedule, with stage two starting early and the intersection reopened to allow traffic movement heading towards Eltham from the city via Fitzsimons Lane.
Bike riders have been able to utilise Bridge Street, Bolton Street, Grand Boulevard and Panorama Avenue to advantage to get through the area.
However, a gas pipe project is putting the squeeze on northbound along Fitzsimons Lane, immediately north of Porter up to Westerfolds Park and riders should be careful, possibly needing to utilise the footpath on the eastern side of Fitzsimons Lane and crossing back over at the pedestrian crossing near Stocklands Templestowe Retirement Village.
Contractors expect to finish the Main Road roundabout intersection ahead of the February 13 deadline, with traffic lights operating.
Works around Porter Street will continue as we build up to the final stage of the conversion of the roundabout there to a signalised intersection in the first half of this year.
Throughout this period Souter Street and Jayson Avenue will be closed. While the road is closed, Souter Street will have a temporary detour via Falkiner Street. Jayson Avenue will be detoured via Homestead Road to Fitzsimons Lane.
Speeds will be reduced to 40km/h and traffic management will be in place 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Works will include:
- installation of new drainage and new pavement
- placement of new kerb underground services
- foundation installation for the new traffic signals and lighting
- installation of traffic signals and lighting
- completion of new sections of footpaths and driveways for the new intersection
- new bike lane configuration that accounts for the needs of everyday riders and road riding groups
