Rail trail lovers can rejoice, as a new section of the popular Great Southern Rail Trail, between Korumburra and Leongatha, is now officially open to the public.
The rail trail, now 109 kilometres in length, is a 90 minute drive from Melbourne and is set on 19th century railway lines.
Delivery of the rail trail extension was lead by South Gippsland Shire Council with exceptional support by Rail Trails Australia and other advocates.
The new section, funded through both local and state government, adds a further 15km of trail to the experience, and is part of a 36km extension of the rail trail from Nyora to Leongatha.
From Leongatha, the Great Southern Rail Trail continues for 72 km through the towns of Meeniyan, Fish Creek, Foster, Toora, Welshpool and ends at the coasts of Port Welshpool.
But wait… there’s more! The rail trail is set to undergo further exciting extensions that will eventually connect it with the Tarra Trail approximately 20 kilometres to the east.
Keep your eyes peeled and your pedals ready.
