Disruptive Sunbury road closure will later benefit bike riders

There will be significant traffic disruption in Sunbury from later this month as Gap Road closes for the removal of the level crossing with a new rail bridge and road under the rail line.

The new Gap Road underpass will open to traffic in late 2022 with separated shared user paths that will allow safer travel for cyclists and pedestrians through Sunbury.

The road will however be closed at the end of May for four months between Evans and Horne Streets as crews work around the clock to excavate 25,000 cubic metres of soil and build the road underpass.

During the road closure, motorists and bike riders will be detoured over the rail line at the Macedon Street bridge, while pedestrians can cross at the nearby Sunbury Station overpass.

There will be extensive signage to explain the detour routes.

Gap Road is a key linkage through Sunbury so traffic disruption will be considerable. As the detour involves roads with roundabouts and other problematic features risers will need to be careful.

To facilitate construction of the new rail bridge, buses will replace trains on sections of the Sunbury, Bendigo, Echuca and Swan Hill lines from Friday 3 June to Wednesday 29 June 2022.

Buses will replace trains on the Sunbury Line from 8.30pm, Friday 20 May to last service on Sunday 22 May and from 8.30pm to last service on Monday 23 May, between Sunshine and Sunbury.

Buses will also replace trains on the Sunbury Line from 9pm, Friday 3 June to last service, Wednesday 29 June, between Sunshine and Sunbury.

Once the Sunbury line upgrade is completed the line will run the bigger modern trains and signalling system.
