Stage 2 of Belconnen bikeway underway

The shovels have hit the ground in Battye Street, Canberra as work starts on the next stage of the Belco bikeway.

Battye Street is in the northern suburb of Bruce and is a major corridor for people accessing the University of Canberra, Radford College, CIT Bruce, and the GIO Stadium. At present, there is a skinny footpath on either side of the four-lane road.

The installation of the newest portion of the Belco bikeway will give locals and visitors a safe means of active travelling to the suburb's campuses and sports reserves.

The bikeway will connect with the C3 principal bike route from Belconnon.

The bikeway will comprise:

  • an off-road path along the eastern side of Battye Street between Haydon Drive and Purdie Street.
  • an off-road cycleway on the northern side of Battye Street, starting at Haydon Drive and continuing across its entire length

This project will also deliver:

  • replacement of removed trees at a ratio of 3:1
  • up to four raised crossings
  • additional lighting
  • native grass plantings.

“This project will mean that more Canberrans can get to work, get to the shops and get to school more confidently and safely on their bikes," said Federal Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister Catherine King.

“The Australian and ACT governments are partnering for the long term to deliver better active transport to locals across the Territory.”
