Good news for mountain bike riders in South Australia and abroad: construction will begin on a new 42 kilometre mountain bike trail in Southern Flinders.
The $1.8 million project will see the trail weaving through Mount Remarkable National Park, approximately four hours north of Adelaide.
The aptly named ‘Epic Mountain Bike Trail’ was designed in consultation with the Nukunu Wapma Thura Aboriginal Corporation to protect and preserve culturally significant heritage sites.
The trail is a segment of the $10 million Remarkable Southern Flinders Ranges project, which aims to enhance and better connect the Southern Flinders region, and promote more nature-based tourism experiences for South Australia.
The Epic Mountain Bike Trail will be the latest in a string of recently built trails in Mount Remarkable. Trails in Willowie and Wirrabara were completed in late 2021.
Environment Minister Susan Close told the Plains Producer: “This mountain bike loop will be built to a standard which will be sensitive to the environment and Aboriginal heritage sites, delivering exceptional views, a great experience and a sense of adventure for riders”.
The Epic Mountain Bike Trail is anticipated to be completed and open to the public in 2023.
