La Trobe Street lane changes

The westbound bike lane in La Trobe Street beside Melbourne Central will be realigned to enable vent shots to the underground station to be upgraded.

The Victorian Government is delivering major upgrades to the City Loop to improve the management of emergency situations at Parliament, Melbourne Central and Flagstaff stations.

These works will involve the installation of modern smoke detection, extraction, and sprinkler systems at these three stations.

From this week until to Monday 25 July night works will take place to establish construction areas surrounding the east and west vent shafts, which are between Swanston and Elizabeth Streets.

The east vent shaft is adjacent to 209 La Trobe Street with the West vent shaft construction area adjacent to 260 La Trobe Street.

These works will take place at night between 6pm and 7am Monday to Friday, 6pm and 8am Saturdays and 6pm and 7am Sundays on La Trobe Street between Swanston Street and Elizabeth Street.

The construction areas will be used from mid-July to late July 2023.

Note that bike parking hoops will be removed during this time.

There will also be changes to bus stops and vehicle parking.

Both westbound lanes will be closed on section of La Trobe Street between Swanston Street and Elizabeth Street from Tuesday 12 July to Saturday 16 July and again from Monday 18 July to Thursday 21 July

Vehicle access to Melbourne Central parking will be maintained

Pedestrian and bicycle access to Melbourne Central Station and the Elizabeth St/La Trobe St tram stop will be maintained.
