Bikes feature in new park plan

A comprehensive bike network will be a key attraction of the massive new marran baba Merri Creek Regional Parklands being developed in Melbourne’s north.

The 2778 hectare string of linked open space stretches from Campbellfield to Beveridge along both sides of the Merri Creek and parts of the Kalkallo Creek.

The government is investing in the construction of new paths that will enable people to walk and cycle in the parklands.

Park users will have new signage to help them use and learn about marran baba Merri Creek Regional Parklands, including large entry signs, wayfinding and information signs with maps.

The project will set out trail options that will help park users enjoy the parklands.

The trail network will build upon the existing Merri Creek Trail with extensions that provide connections through different areas of the parklands and open space.

The trail will also provide the opportunity to link with the wallan wallan Regional Parklands to the north.

A future directions plan now being developed will identify the best locations for trails, picnic facilities, access points and play areas that will be created in years to come.

The state government is seeking public input into the vision and priorities for the parklands. You can view the maps, take the survey and make submissions. There is an online information session next week.

A fact sheet is also available. Consultation closes on 16 August 2022.

The parklands will support remnant vegetation communities that are part of an important wildlife corridor, which is increasingly being surrounded by urban areas.

The parklands will provide habitat for significant species and ecological communities including Western Basalt Plains grassland, curly sedge, plains yam daisy, golden sun moth and growling grass frog.

Some of the parklands are already accessible by bike, including the galada tamboore in Craigieburn and the Whittlesea Public Gardens.

The new parklands will link and connect:
• galada tamboore, Campbellfield
• Whittlesea Public Gardens, Lalor
• bababi marning Grasslands, Campbellfield
• galgi ngarrk Grasslands, Wollert
• John Laffan Reserve, Craigieburn
• Bells Ave Wetlands, Kalkallo
• Kalkallo and Curly Sedge creeks
• Merri Creek Regional Trail
• galada tamboore Trail

The final plan is expected to be completed in June 2023.
