Devonport Open Space Strategy open for comment
Devonport has released a Public Open Spaces Strategy for comment and not surprisingly the community has asked for more bike connections.
Some of the recommendations which arose from the first stage of consultation and gap analysis work include:
- Improve access and connecting walking/cycling routes from the Mersey River, to the TAFE, Hilcrest Primary School and west to the Don River.
- Provide a full walking and cycling route along the Bass Strait foreshore and the Mersey River (around the Port).
- Provide safe walking/cycling along Wright St to Tarleton St, under the Bass Hwy and south along River Road.
- Provide walking/cycling access via the proposed Don River Rail Trail path connection, connecting Don Reserve south to Tugrah and Kelcey Tier Reserve.
- Maintain walking/cycling access along River Road and the Mersey River to connect with Latrobe LGA and improve this section of the Northwest Coastal Pathway.
You can have your say before 31 August via the online survey.
Tickets not deterring ferry riders
People are continuing to ride to the ferry after the introduction of paid ticketing for passengers this week, with bikes still allowed onboard for free.
Thanks to Adam for sending through this photo of bikes on board the ferry on Tuesday, a fine day with no wind, which shows people are choosing the ferry even when the weather is okay to ride the bridge.
The ferry will be an important alternative for riders when the government starts building the new bridge paths next year.

Kate Reed to get pump track
Launceston Council has agreed to pursue construction of a pump track at the Kate Reed Nature Recreation Area at its meeting on Thursday 28 July.
The council reported that a new track close to Launceston was desirable as the only nearby tack was the nine-year-old unsealed track at Hollybank, 20 km from town.
Council officers presented a shortlist of five locations for consideration: Kate Reed, Waverley Lake Park, West Launceston Community Park, Heritage Forest, and Royal Park.
