Bell Street in Preston will be closed tonight (Thursday) to enable remnants of the old level crossing to be ripped out.
Contractors will upgrade the road underneath the rail bridges, including removing the old rail tracks, excavating the road, installing drainage and placing new asphalt.
Detours are in place but riders should be alert as traffic encounters changed road arrangements and delays.
From tomorrow, 12 August to end of August, there will be 24/7 lane closures on Bell Street.
There will also be local intersection closures during the works, with detours in place.
Blanch Street and Bell Street intersection – note this will temporarily be changed to one-way only (entry from Blanch Street, exit via Peter Street) Donovan Street and Bell Street intersection Garnet Street and Bell Street intersection.
The pedestrian crossings at Bell Street (north and south side) will be closed intermittently during these works. Traffic management and detours will be in place to safely guide pedestrians around the closures.
Four level crossings at Oakover Road, Bell Street, Cramer Street and Murray Road have been removed.
The citybound bridge is now complete and construction is underway on the second bridge and new stations at Bell and Preston.
By raising the rail line over the roads, the community benefits from improved safety and accessibility, and new open spaces – which will be completed in 2023.
