Tassie Bike News Bites
Bus bike parking cage opens

The Firthside Park and Ride bike parking is mostly finished so you can now ride to the bus stop and have somewhere undercover to lock it up.

There is still no security system in place so make sure you bring one or two good quality D-locks.

The Huntingfield bike parking will be the next off the rank, with work to be finished in the coming months.

Hobart bike boxes in place

And more bike parking in the south is going in around Hobart with bike boxes outside the University of Tasmania's Hedberg building in Sun Street and inside the Hobart Central car park.

These are the old-fashioned bring-your-own-padlock style boxes so it's a first-come, first-served basis.

If you notice someone has kept a box locked report it to the council on 03 6238 2711, email: coh@hobartcity.com.au or Snap, Send, Solve.

Website revamp keeps track of your trails

A worthy goal for any Australian bike rider is to tackle some or all of our many and varied rail trails.

Rail Trails Australia has revamped its website so now you can create an account and easily track the trails you’ve visited and the ones you’d like to.

A simple listing of all the rail trails on offer with links to more information help you plan your next trip based around the trails you’d like to ride.

Eleven of Tasmania’s rail trails are listed including “potential” trails such as a Derwent Valley rail trail.

Longford main street plans deferred

The Northern Midlands Council has deferred its decision on new Longford main street works for a second time, following a protest by cyclists and farmers.

The council’s bicycle committee also met and advised the council the plans should be amended to make the road safer for people riding.

The Examiner Newspaper reported that new plans for the works would be presented at the council's next meeting.

Molle and Collins intersection about to go live

Work on the long-awaited Molle and Collins streets intersection lights is nearly at an end, with groundworks mostly completed and the lights in place but not turned on.

The two pedestrian crossings of Molle Street have been improved and bike storage boxes have been painted on Molle and Collins street.

The opening to the car park has been widened to provide more space for people walking and riding and a raised path now acts as a speed hump for drivers entering and exiting the car park.
