There is an exciting new step in making the Pippita Rail Trail a reality, with new funding commitments made by New South Wales Active Transport Minister Rob Stokes.
The 2 km rail trail in Western Sydney will run between Lidcombe Railway Station and Sydney Olympic Park.
‘Pippita’ was the name of a railway station on the former Abattoirs Line in Sydney, which serviced the industrial area where Olympic Park is now located. The line was rebuilt and reopened as the Olympic Park railway line in 1998.
The Pippita Rail trail, which would run along a disused section of the rail line, has been discussed for several years. Following active campaigning by local riders, a feasibility study for the rail trail was signed off by Cumberland Council back in 2020.
A funding commitment of $770,000 was announced in early August, part of the Get NSW Active funding package.
The funding for a new rail trail in NSW is timely, with the release of the new NSW Rail Trails Framework, and the recent passing of an important bill amendment that will cut a lot red tape with building rail trails across the state.
