Spur for Alphington link

The abandoned rail spur through Alphington, a long holding promise as a safe and convenient connection through to Fairfield, may soon come to fruition.

Owned by VicTrack, the vacant land curves from the Heidelberg Road/Grange Road intersection up to the current suburban rail line at Fairfield.

Its utility as a link though to the trail along the Yarra River over the old rail bridge, to the Kew Boulevard, and now the new residential suburb on the old paper mill site, is obvious.

Local municipalities Darebin and Yarra have long advocated for a shared path along this alignment, particularly because of the important link for communities to Fairfield Station and Fairfield activity centre away from Grange Road, which is unsuitable for active travel.

VicTrack is now considering future options to activate former transport land at Grange Road in Alphington.

It is seeking public input and local community insights and preferences for the use of the site.

VicTrack will then use these insights to inform a further round of engagement as part of the development of a masterplan in 2023.

This is your opportunity to remind VicTrack of the importance of providing a path link through the area as the result of and redevelopment.

Following this initial phase, the feedback received will then inform the design of more comprehensive engagement to support the development of a site masterplan in 2023.

There will have a further opportunity to have a say on the project as part of the process to rezone the site to enable future alternative uses.
