New cycling safety campaign hits the airwaves
The Road Safety Advisory Council has launched a new cycling safety awareness campaign that reminds drivers to take care around bike riders.
The idea for the campaign was sparked by recent research that found some drivers saw people riding as less than human, and frequent calls from riders for drivers to show more respect for other road users.
The tagline is “Let’s have each others backs – We all have someone to get back to” and shows riders with the family bumper stickers often seen on cars on the backs of their tops.
Bridgewater Bridge works will slow traffic
Work on the new Bridgewater Bridge will begin on Monday 3 October, which will reduce lanes and slow speeds, so expect more traffic build-up on either side of the current bridge for the next 2 years.
Barriers will be put on the sides of Main Road, Black Snake Road and the approach to Boyer Road to protect work sites.
The project team working on this has been responsive to cycling issues, so if you feel there are any safety concerns for people riding through the area, let us know.
Central Coast settlement strategy touches on transport
The Central Coast Council has released a Settlement Strategy for public comment and while most of it is focused on where to house a growing population, transport does get a mention.
The Coastal Pathway is put forward as an example of what the council is doing to make it easier to ride a bike for transport and one of the 7 planning principles proposed in the report includes keeping development confined to established centres to utilise existing and planned paths.
If you want to support this approach you can make a comment before 7 October: https://www.centralcoast.tas.gov.au/have-your-say-draft-central-coast-local-area-settlement-strategy/
Burnie and Wynyard communicate pathway progress
Burnie City Council and Waratah-Wynyard Council have set up a webpage to chart the progress of the coastal pathway between Wynyard and Cooee.
A development application for the path is due to be lodged later this month.
If all goes to schedule, work on the pathway is due to start in the middle of 2023.
