Olympic cyclist Sarah Gigante joins the Great Vic Bike Ride

Sarah Gigante will join school groups on Monday 28 November as they pedal from Noorat to Timboon in south west Victoria on the Great Vic Bike Ride.

It will be a journey back in time for the Olympic Cyclist, Movistar Pro Cycling Team rider and former Australian Road Champion who started cycling as a six-year-old in 2006 on a tag-along bike behind her Mum Kerry on the Great Vic Bike Ride. After then riding on a tandem she rode her first solo Great Vic aged ten.

Sarah Gigante is now the Great Vic Bike Ride Ambassador and says she is delighted and excited about being part of the cycling holiday with young people.

She said: “I can’t think of a better place to discover the joys of riding a bike than on the Great Vic Bike Ride.

After developing a taste for riding, Sarah continued her cycling feats and development with the Brunswick Cycling Club. She has since gone on to win the 2019 national road titles in the under 23 and elite road races as well as the 2020 and 2021 time trials.

2022 has been a big year for Sarah with her first year as a World Tour rider in Europe. Her first European victory and biggest career win to date came in May at the tough Emakumeen Nafarroako Classic in Spain.

The successes have not necessarily come easily. She has fought back from crashes, myocarditis (an inflamed heart), covid and now is balancing studying for her Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics and Geography with the University of Melbourne as well as racing.

“It has been a great year and I am looking forward to sharing some of my love of bike riding with others,” she said.

The Great Vic Bike Ride starts on November 26 from Koroit in south west Victoria and finishes in Buninyong just outside Ballarat on Sunday December 4.
